Fostering Metacognitive Thinking and Self-Regulation in World Language Classrooms: High-Impact Strategies for Teachers and Students


Description: This professional development session is designed to equip language teachers with high-impact strategies for integrating metacognitive thinking and self-regulation techniques into students' practices. Participants will explore innovative approaches, including metacognitive marking, 'live' modelling, retrieval practice, and student-led strategies such as the Leitner System and Revision Maps, designed to enhance student engagement, comprehension, and language proficiency.

  1. Understanding Metacognitive Thinking and Self-Regulation: Delve into the theoretical underpinnings of metacognitive processes and self-regulation techniques, and their profound impact on language learning outcomes.

  2. Integrating Metacognitive Marking: Explore practical methodologies for incorporating metacognitive marking strategies into language assessment practices, fostering reflective thinking and self-assessment among learners.

  3. Two High-Impact Teacher-Led Strategies: a. 'Live' Modelling - Extended Writing Task: Witness first-hand the power of 'live' modelling as teachers demonstrate effective writing strategies in real-time, providing students with actionable insights into the writing process. b. Retrieval Practice via Quizlet/Carousel Learning: Engage in dynamic retrieval practice activities utilising digital platforms like Quizlet or Carousel Learning, designed to enhance memory recall and reinforce language acquisition.

  4. Two High-Impact Student-Led Strategies: a. Revision Cards - The Leitner System (Anki): Empower students to take control of their learning through the implementation of the Leitner System, a proven spaced repetition technique facilitated by digital flashcards.

    b. Revision Maps: Encourage students to visually organise and synthesise language concepts through the creation of revision maps, fostering deeper understanding and retention of linguistic content.


Duration: The session is structured for one hour, allowing ample time for collaborative discussion via Q & A.
